Cristiano Ronaldo is gone, Zinedine Zidane is gone and Real Madrid’s hoodoo over Atletico Madrid in Europe is also gone.

Diego SImeone’s side thrashed the Champions League winners 4-2 to win the European Super Cup on Wednesday night in Tallinn, Estonia.

It was Real Madrid’s first official match since losing their talisman and coach and new man in charge Julen Lopetegui was shown just how hard the upcoming season will be by an impressive Atletico.

Diego Costa smashed home from an angle to send Atletico ahead, but Karim Benzema headed Madrid level after a good cross from Gareth Bale.

Sergio Ramos converted a penalty to send Real ahead after Juanfran’s handball but Costa struck again from close range to equalise, with the game heading into extra time.

Saul Niguez smashed home a brilliant volley to put Atletico ahead and then Koke finished neatly after a fine team-move to ensure Atletico would take home their third UEFA Super Cup.

The Europa League winners will hope this is a sign of a big season in which they can aspire to do better yet - the Champions League final is at the Wanda Metropolitano.
