Valencia 1-1 Real Madrid: Benzema saves Madrid in the 95th minute

Los Blancos didn't take advantage of their chances and nearly lost the game

Karim Benzema’s 95th minute equaliser earned Real Madrid a point at Valencia which leaves them level with Barcelona going into Wednesday’s Clasico.

Carlos Soler sent Valencia ahead after 78 minutes when he fired home from Daniel Wass’s cut-back.

Madrid looked sunk, having failed to score in a first half they dominated, but Benzema smashed in his 12th goal of the league season after Thibaut Courtois had a header saved from a corner and the rebound fell nicely for the forward.

“A point is not a lot for us today, with the first half we had, we had the chances to score,” said Zidane. “We’re concentrating on what we’re doing until the end and we drew but deserve merit.

“The second half they came into the game more and that’s how it is in a match, you can’t play 90 minutes at the same level, but our first half was great and I would have liked to score then. I’m proud of what the boys have done.”

Madrid are unbeaten in 11 matches but this was a disappointing performance. They could have moved two points clear at the top after Barcelona drew 2-2 at Real Sociedad.
