Former Real Madrid manager and coach Jorge Valdano would choose Roberto Martinez over Antonio Conte as Julen Lopetegui's successor.

Speaking to Onda Cero, Valdano was asked about Madrid's crisis following their 5-1 defeat at Camp Nou against Barcelona on Sunday.

"[Appointing Martinez] seems the best idea to me," he said. "A coach that could turn things around. He seems more adaptable than Conte.

"Conte has prestige because he's won in various contries, but Roberto [would] adapt to this team. It's not an easy job because there's no regular goalscorer."

Lopetegui will be sacked by Florentino Perez on Monday. Conte is expected to be his replacement. The former Juventus and Chelsea coach is reported to have cut short a holiday in Egypt to fly to Madrid.

Madrid's loss to Barça saw them slump to ninth in the La Liga table.
