Real Madrid were hammered 3-0 by Sevilla in Andalusia as they failed to take advantage of Barca’s slip up and go top of La Liga.
The Catalans lost 2-1 at Leganes in a shocking display, which Madrid managed to match at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.
Andre Silva hit two goals in four minutes with Wissam Ben Yedder adding a third in a bombastic first half.
"The explanation is that we had a bad game, with a bad start, where they imposed themselves and scored two goals," said Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui.
"They started the game really well and we did not. In the second half we were better, but we have to accept the defeat and congratulate Sevilla, we weren’t good enough."
Casemiro and Marcelo cocked-up for the first goal and Thibaut Courtois spilled a shot for the second.
