Luka Modric, first Croatia and then Real Madrid

He's played more minutes for his country than his club this season

Luka Modric's case is very curious. He's played more for Croatia than Real Madrid this season, assuming he plays against Wales, with his country able to qualify for Euro 2020 with a win.

That will be 270 minutes, to the 250 he has played with Madrid. Modric has scored twice for Croatia and once for Los Blancos.

The reason for that is an injury which he suffered with Croatia at the end of the previous international break - a clear case of the FIFA virus.

Modric missed a fortnight, starting one game for Madrid and appearing on the bench twice. Enough to make sure he was called up again by his country.

The 34-year-old 2018 Ballon d'Or winner may need to be rested by Madrid when he gets back. Madrid think he should leave his national team to focus on the side who pays his wages.
