Espanyol 1-0 Real Madrid: Gerard Moreno strikes to punish Zidane

The forward netted in the 93rd minute for Espanyol's first win over Madrid in a decade

Juan Carlos Gracia

Barcelona, Atletico and now Real Madrid. Quique Sanchez Flores's side, 37 years later, have beaten all three of the biggest teams in Spain in one season across all competitions. Madrid, who rotated hugely, went down thanks to Gerard Moreno's 93rd minute strike. They are 14 points behind Barcelona in La Liga and can only hope to win the Champions League.

Despite Madrid's injuries - Modric, Kroos, Casemiro, Marcelo - Zidane rested Cristiano Ronaldo entirely and benched Carvajal and Benzema. He gave chances to Gareth Bale, Asensio, Isco, and they spurned it.

Espanyol were the better side, with Moreno seeing Navas save well from him early on, before he scored but it was wrongly ruled out for offside. Gareth Bale had an effort blocked by Victor Sanchez's arm but it was not a handball.

Oscar Duarte hit the bar with a header in the second half and the hosts were the better side, eventually getting their reward when Moreno struck in the final seconds, with his effort taking a small deflection off Varane and beating Navas.
