Real Madrid won an action packed game against Bayern Munich to take control of their Champions League quarter-final tie against the German champions.

Arturo Vidal opened the scoring with a header from a corner but went from hero to villain at the end of the first half when he blazed a penalty over, giving up the chance to make it 2-0.

A Cristiano Ronaldo goal levelled things up after the break and Bayern were then reduced to 10 men after Javi Martinez was sent off for a second yellow card.

With a man advantage, Madrid pushed forward and Ronaldo proved the man for the big occasion, edging his side in front on the night.

Bayern had deserved their half-time lead but by the end of the game they must have been happy to be going into the second leg only one goal behind.

Manuel Neuer made two top quality saves and Sergio Ramos — rightly — had a late goal ruled out for offside.

Carlo Ancelotti, therefore, will have to come up with a way to outmanoeuvre his former assistant Zinedine Zidane when he returns to the Bernabeu for the first time since leaving his role as Madrid manager in 2015.
