Atletico Madrid 1-3 Real Madrid: VAR, VAR and VAR in derby clash

An intense game saw VAR used a lot but Madrid won to move within five points on Barcelona

Real Madrid pulled within five points of Barcelona as they beat Atletico Madrid 3-1 in a derby clash at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday.

Casemiro sent Real ahead with an overhead kick but Antoine Griezmann levelled with a cool finish through Thibaut Courtois’s legs.

Sergio Ramos restored Real’s lead from the penalty spot after Jose Gimenez brought Vinicius Junior down on the edge of the area.

Then Gareth Bale, on as a substitute, scored his 100th Real Madrid goal with a low finish.

Atletico ended the game with 10 men after Thomas Partey was dismissed of a second yellow card.

Alvaro Morata, on loan at Atletico from Chelsea, scored a sensational lob but it was ruled out for a fractional offside, one of many controversies on an afternoon where VAR was called on a lot.

"Winning the league motivates us, it's a really balanced competition and we have to keep fighting for it and making life difficult for Barcelona,” said Real Madrid skipper Sergio Ramos.
