Negotiations between Paris Saint-Germain and Neymar over a new contract have hit a stalemate, according to French newspaper Le Parisien.

The Ligue 1 champions are seriously considering if they want to renew the Brazilian's terms after a summer in which he pushed for a return to Barcelona.

The report says that talks between the player and the club are close to breaking down completely after the summer transfer window, explaining time is still needed for the rift to heal.

Before that, PSG were planning to offer a new deal to Neymar, whose current terms expire in 2022. They wanted to tie him down until 2024 or even 2025.

WORTH THE EFFORT?

However, there are also doubts now about his fitness -- he's been ruled out for another month -- and then there's the emergence of Kylian Mbappe.

Neymar was the star when he joined PSG but he's gradually been replaced by France forward Mbappe, who scored a hat-trick off the bench in the Champions League in midweek.
