Valencia 2-1 Real Madrid: Zinedine Zidane suffers first defeat in second spell

Guedes and Garay did the damage for the hosts and Benzema pulled one back

Real Madrid were comfortably beaten by Valencia at Mestalla, their first defeat since Zinedine Zidane returned in March.

Goncalo Guedes sent the hosts ahead in the first half with a snappy finish before Ezequiel Garay made the game safe with a header in the second period.

Karim Benzema continued his personal good season by scoring at the end but it was far too late.

Madrid are third and safe of slipping out of the Champions League places, 10 points ahead of Getafe in fourth.

Zinedine Zidane will see this as a prime example of why the team needs to be rebuilt in the summer, unable to match Los Che, who move fifth, closing in on a Champions League qualifying spot.

“I’m sorry to disagree with Zidane but we were far superior to Real Madrid,” said Marcelino, having heard that the Frenchman said that a draw would have been fair.
