King Felipe VI watched over the debut of the new Atletico Madrid stadium, the Wanda Metropolitano, which has capacity for around 68,000 supporters.
At around 20.30, a quarter of an hour before they kicked off against Malaga, events started to begin. While planes flew overhead leaving trails of smoke of the Spanish flag, while names of their former homes were displayed on the pitch on banners.
Retiro (1903), O'Donnell (1913), Metropolitano (1923) and Vicente Calderón (1966). Finally out came a banner for the Wanda Metropolitano (2017).
Then from the sky came three parachutists. The first bore the match-ball, the second Atletico's badge and the third a Spanish flag. In the stands fans sung the Atletico anthem and waved their flags.
