Elche relegated because of tax bill, handing Eibar a La Liga reprieve

Elche have been relegated to La Segunda Division and fined 180,000 euros after failing to convince the LFP of their ability to settle their tax bill.

The LFP have therefore confirmed their demotion out of La Liga for financial reasons. Eibar, who had been relegated in 18th position, will take their place in the top flight.

Juan Anguix, the Elche president, had hoped to convince a judge that the club would be able to pay off their debts, but Manuel Rivero González disagreed and sent them down to the second tier of Spanish football.

Rivero explained his decision was taken because of the amount owed to the tax office, also citing the lack of clarity to the Valencian club's financial planning.

Elche have made it clear they will pursue every legal angle to reverse the decision, but for now, it looks like Eibar will continue in La Liga afer all.
