Atletico Madrid have decided to release their female side's B team goalkeeper Sara Ezquerro, after the controversy provoked by a picture she posted on Twitter celebrating Real Madrid's Champions League victory over Atletico.
Ezquerro appeared in the photo along with a former Atletico women's player Maria Calvo, on May 28, celebrating Real's peanlty shoot-out win in the San Siro. This caused a big reaction from fans on social media who called for Atletico to take action.
Initially the club listened to the player's version of events and decided to postpone a final decision. She was separated from the squad, and during this time she wrote a letter explaining the photo and speaking of her respect for the club. However Atletico have now told the player they no longer require her services.
