Atletico Madrid risk falling further behind Barça as they're held by Girona

Simeone's side could slip 11 points behind the league leaders

Portu equalised for Girona after Griezmann had put Atletico ahead

Atletico Madrid could end the weekend 11 points back from Barcelona after they were held by Girona on Sunday.

Antoine Griezmann gave Diego Simeone's side a first half lead but Portu struck for the Catalans to earn a point in the second half.

It's a second winless game in a row for Atletico at the Wanda Metropolitano. They were beaten 2-1 in the Copa del Rey by Sevilla in midweek.

With Diego Costa back from a one-game ban, Atletico looked to be on course for three points when the Hispanic-Brazilian played his part in Griezmann's opener.

But Girona are afraid of no one and, fresh from last week's 6-0 win against Las Palmas, they went in search of an equaliser.

It came in the 73rd minute through Portu but they still pushed for three points in the final 15 minutes.

In the end, though, both teams settled for a share of the spoils. It's a point which moved Atletico to within eight of leaders Barça, but Ernesto Valverde's side could make that 11 if they win at Real Betis on Sunday.
