Barcelona thumped title rivals Atletico 6-1 on Saturday in front of nearly 5,000 fans at the Johan Cruyff Stadium.

Atletico took an early lead through Amanda Sampedro but Barca responded in style and led 4-1 by half time.

Lluis Cortes' side added two more after the break as they sent a message to Atletico, who have won the league in each of the last three years, that they're hungry for their first title since 2015.

Sampedro's goal was canceled out by Jenni Hermoso, who scored a penalty in the eighth minute after Aissatou Tounkara had handled.

Asisat Oshoala then hit the bar from point-blank range but her blushes were spared when Mariona Caldentey converted thew rebound.

Kenti Robles turned Jenni's free-kick into her own net before Oshoala finally got on the scoresheet just before half time.

Oshoala added her second after the break and another own goal, this time from Silvia Meseguer following good work from Carolina Graham Hansen, wrapped up the rout.

Tounkara was sent off late on for Atletico, while Toni Duggan, who left Barca as the summer, returned to a warm ovation off the bench in Atletico colours.

Barca have seven points from their three games this season, while Atletico have six.
