Alaves 0-1 Espanyol: Moreno goal extends Pericos unbeaten run to six

Josep Coves

Gerard Moreno made up for missing a penalty by scoring the winning goal in Espanyol’s 1-0 win against Alaves on Sunday.

Quique Sanchez Flores’ side are now unbeaten in six games and have kept clean sheets in five of those matches, including credible draws against Villarreal and Athletic Club.

After a poor start to the season, the Barcelona-based side are beginning to show signs of life and have risen to 12th in the table.

In a tight game in the Basque Country, Alaves may feel hard done by to have lost, but it was Espanyol who took their chance.

Moreno could have put his side in front from the penalty spot, but his effort was well saved by Fernando Pacheco after Alexis had handled in the area.

That was in the 79th minute and it looked like it would earn the home side a draw, but Moreno made amends two minutes later.

He wriggled free from his marker to get his head on the end of a corner from the impressive Pablo Piatti.

Espanyol face Leganes next at Cornella-El Prat, before travelling to Atletico Madrid and then hosting Sporting Gijon before the Catalan derby against Barcelona on Dec. 18.
