Portugal came third in the Confederations Cup after beating Mexico 2-1 in extra-time, in a match they did not miss Cristiano Ronaldo in. The Madrid forward is already on holiday, leaving after his side were beaten in the semi-finals of the tournament by Chile. Fernando Santos' side, accused of super-conservatism during the tournament, were more attacking here and had various chances to score, including a missed penalty.

Guilhermo Ochoa denied Andre Silva from the spot, while Rui Patricio made several good sides for his team. Netu opened the scoring for Mexico when he put through his own net, before Pepe finally beat the superb Ochoa in stoppage time at the end of the 90 minutes. It forced extra-time and Portugal took advantage when Adrien Silva netted in the 104th minute. Nelsinho and Raul Jimenez were both sent off for second yellow cards as the game closed out.
