Real Madrid were eliminated from the Champions League in the last 16 for the second season running as they were beaten 2-1 by Manchester City on Friday.

Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus capitalised on mistakes from Raphael Varane as City reached the quarterfinals courtesy of a 4-2 aggregate win.

Karim Benzema had briefly brought Madrid back into the tie by levelling on the night but City were the better side on the night and deserved to progress.

City won the first leg 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu and began the second leg as favourites behind closed doors.

Pep Guardiola's side strengthened their position in the tie when Gabriel Jesus caught Varane napping and squared for Sterling to tap home.

Benzema levelled before half time after good work from Rodrygo Goes, heading past Ederson from six yards to make it 3-2 on aggregate.

However, Madrid's hopes of making the final eight in Lisbon when Varane's poor back pass was intercepted by Jesus, who beat Thibaut Courtois.

The defeat is Zidane's first Champions League KO as Madrid manager having won the competition as coach three times in the past.

City, meanwhile, will face Lyon in the last eight after the French side upset the odds to knock out Juventus.
