Atletico Madrid earned an impressive victory over Juventus on Wednesday to put one foot in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Defenders Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin grabbed the goals late on after VAR had ruled out a header by substitute Alvaro Morata.

In the first half Atletico were awarded a penalty but the video referee system downgraded their appeal to a free-kick after correctly seeing Diego Costa was fouled by De Sciglio outside the box.

The decision to rule out Morata’s goal for a push was a bit harsher.

Costa fired wide when he should have scored and Antoine Griezmann hit the bar as the hosts dominated two-time winners Juve at the Wanda Metropolitano.

But it wasn’t until the 78th minute that Atletico broke the deadlock, with Gimenez stabbing home from close range after a scramble in the box at a corner.

Then Godin blasted in the second in the 83rd, his effort deflecting in against Cristiano Ronaldo, the perfect ending for Atletico.

The second leg in Turin takes place on March 12.
