Chapter closed. Bayern Munich have confirmed Thiago Alcantara has extended his contract with the club until 2021, ending any possibility of a return to Barcelona.

Thiago's contract was due to expire in 2019 and Barça had been credited with an interest in re-signing him, but Bayern moved quickly to tie down a key member of their squad.

“Thiago is one of the best and most coveted midfielders in Europe,” said chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

“We’re very pleased as a club to be able to secure the services of such an amazing player for the long term.”

Thiago added: “My family and I feel at home in Munich. Everything is going well here, and I want to win a lot of trophies here with FC Bayern in the future.”

The Spain international is in his fourth season at the Bundesliga club and has had several injury issues, but he has impressed this season under Carlo Ancelotti.

As well as his new contract ending any potential Barça interest, it also kills the chances of an immediate reunion with his former coach Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
