There's a campaign, but Gerard Pique doesn't help himself

There is a campaign against Gerard Pique championed by the media in Madrid. That's true. The bullying and the harassment of the FC Barcelona player is constant. And it's reaching the point where his situation with the Spanish national team is unsustainable. The jeers during the game against Slovakia is the latest evidence of that. And the RFEF's decision to move La Roja's game against England away from the Santiago Bernabeu is a reflection of how serious it's become.

The persecution of Pique has no limits. Anything the Catalan defender does is viewed through a microscope, scutinised until every last detail has been raked through. But Pique has made a lot of mistakes in recent times. Too many. He's fed his enemy. From his run-in with the police to his recent night out in Gijon... Pique is not exactly making himself an example to follow. A footballer like him, who is the focus of so much public opinion, should be leading the way.

I'm not talking about his messages to Real Madrid, which form part of rivalry in sport. Nor about his clashes with referees. Nor about his positioning on the independence process currently going on in Catalonia. I am talking about the errors he makes away from the football pitch, those that feed those who wish to destroy him. There is nothing wrong with Pique the football player. But Pique the person needs to tread with a little more car. That's just some advice...
