Barcelona limped out of the Champions League on Tuesday as they were beaten 3-0 by Roma.
Edin Dzeko, Kostas Manolas and Daniele De Rossi were on target as Roma turned around a 4-1 first leg deficit as Barca exited Europe in the quarterfinals for the third successive season.
Ernesto Valverde named the same lineup as the first leg but failed to change things as the Italians dominated the game.
Dzeko gave them the lead early on, finishing from close range after holding off weak challenges from Jordi Alba and Samuel Umtiti.
Roma had chances to double their lead as they dominated the opening half, while Barca’s best chances came from Lionel Messi free kicks, which went over.
The Serie A side eventually got their second goal after the break when Gerard Pique fouled Dzeko, with De Rossi scoring from the penalty spot.
There was an inevitability about the third Roma goal. Marc-Andre ter Stegen had been called into action several times when Manolas headed home inside the final 10 minutes.
Barca had no time to react, with Valverde finally throwing Ousmane Dembele on in search of the goal which would have taken them through.
It was never forthcoming, though, as they crashed out 4-4 on away goals, that Dzeko strike at Camp Nou the difference.
The dream of another treble ended in Rome, where Pep Guardiola’s side clinched the treble in 2009.
Barca still have an unbeaten La Liga season, the league title and the Copa del Rey to play for, but it will take a while to recover from this stunning defeat.
