Divock Origi started it in the seventh minute, tapping home after Jordi Alba’s mistake allowed Jordan Henderson in. Marc-Andre ter Stegen saved the midfielder’s shot, but Origi tapped in the rebound.
Playing because Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino were out of action, the striker made himself a hero for the baying home fans.
Georginio Wijnaldum struck twice in little over two second half minutes to pull Liverpool level on the night. His first goal was a mistake from Ter Stegen, letting in the midfielder’s shot which was close to him.
The second saw Wijnaldum power home a header from Xherdan Shaqiri’s ball in from the left, stunning Barca whose advantage had dissipated.
Liverpool’s fourth, the winner, was a humiliation on its own.
Alexander-Arnold’s cunning corner routine left Barca’s defence sleeping and Origi swept into the net unmarked.
"The whole game was too much," said Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp.
"Winning is difficult but with a clean sheet, I don't know how they did it.
“It means so much to all of us. There are more important things in the world. But creating this emotional atmosphere together is so special. It's all about the players.
