Lionel Messi equals the record of Ronaldinho

The Argentine scored his sixth free kick of the league season against Leganes

Francesc J. Gimeno

FC Barcelona forward Leo Messi is a free kick king and he showed it again against Leganes on Saturday. He scored his seventh free-kick of the season, six of which have come in La Liga. That's equal with Barcelona's biggest ever tally of free-kicks in a season by one player, scored by Ronaldinho in the 2006-07 campaign. Messi's other came against Olympiakos in the UCL.

Messi opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a free-kick that dipped into the net, sending Barca on their way to a 3-1 win. The Blaugrana forward has scored six goals from outside the area in his last six league games, four of which were free-kicks.

HISTORY

It was Messi's 27th goal of the league season and he hit two more to get to 29. Messi has 34 free-kick goals for Barcelona, as well as six more for Argentina, taking him to a total of 40. The most he had reached in a single season was four, in 2011-12 and 2015-16.
