In an interview with TVE, Joan Laporta has made it clear that the European Super League is not ‘paralysed’ but continuing forward because ‘it’s a way of saving European football’. The Barcelona president says he’s had conversations with Florentino Perez to continue the development of ‘themes attractive competition in the world’ and fit it “into the current football ecosystem, without destroying the current leagues.”

“The Super League is a way of saving European football. We have no interest in ruining the national leagues because they are fundamentals and they are very attractive,” he explained. “We cannot leave continental football in the hands of states that don’t belong in the EU. We’ll repeat that forever. We have continue on this road because if not it will devalue football and it won’t be sustainable. Clubs like Barcelona, Madrid and Juventus have history and that has to be taken into account.”

He said it’s about ensuring outside money does not ruin the game. “Man City and PSG have a machine of making money and we are fighting against that,” he said. “It’s not just Barça, Madrid and Juventus. There are other teams that are behind the project.”
