Rakitic saw two yellow cards, one for stepping on Joaquin, another for a cynical foul on Giovani Lo Celso with the score at 2-3, and Barcelona at risk of conceding a fourth.
Philippe Coutinho is also injured, meaning Valverde will have to include two new players in his regular starting side.
