Griezmann struggles to shine

Despite being given freedom to roam, the French international failed to make an impact

More motivated than ever, particularly on social media, Antoine Griezmann is expected to be the leader of Barça's post-Messi era. He himself acknowledged this responsibility in an interview after last night's fixture. However, he struggled to make an impact at the San Mamés in last night's 1-1 draw. While the side's collective performance didn't exactly help, this can't be used as an excuse by the ex-Atlético de Madrid striker, who has finally been given the tactical freedom that has been such widely spoken about.

"I need to play more of a leading role", he said after the game, aware that his performance was not up to scratch. When it comes to self-criticism, the Frenchman has always been refreshingly honest. In the post-Messi era, the ex-Atlético forward really needs to make the step up. Not in terms of attitude and commitment, as these have never been absent in his performances. However, in terms of his performances and attacking output, he needs to improve. Koeman admitted that Messi's goals and assists will now need to be spread between various players, including Griezmann himself.

Against Real Sociedad in last weekend's game, Griezmann was exemplary in his work rate and dedication. However, he is now expected to play a more decisive role, and working hard alone isn't enough. Last night, he didn't have a single shot on goal, make any key passes, create any chances or complete any dribbles. He also lost the ball seven times. It was an underwhelming evening for Barça's number '7'.

PATIENCE IS NEEDED

Despite all of the above, Barcelona must have patience with Griezmann. It will take time to learn how to play without Messi, and Koeman and his staff need to find the right formula that allows Griezmann to shine. Above all, they need to find a way to get him more involved in and around the box. However, if last night is anything to go by, Griezmann might end up going from being 'Messi's supporting act' to 'Memphis' supporting act', when it is he who should play the starring role.
