Gerard Pique and a season of constant punishment

The defender has been booked 14 times and will miss the Real Betis clash

Jordi Gil

Gerard Pique is never out of trouble this season. The defender was booked for the 10th time in La Liga against Levante and will miss next season's clash with Real Betis. Overall he has 14 bookings in 27 matches. It's especially high compared to previous years.

In 2018-19, Pique was booked seven times in 52 official games. Half as many bookings in double, more or less, the amount of games.

Pique and his centre-back partner are suffering because they are more exposed, with the midfield lacking the control they previously had.

Lenglet was sent off against Getafe and Araujo dismissed against Sevilla. 12 of Pique's bookings have been for fouls, and two for protesting.

Pique might have been sent off against Atletico when he brought down Alvaro Morata already on a yellow card but Mateu Lahoz let him off the hook.

Pique was already banned against Eibar for his fifth yellow card after the first eight weeks of the campaign. In the Champions League he missed the Dortmund home game after three yellows.
