Goodbye Andres. That was what 85,000 people gathered at Camp Nou here today to say. And they did, with Iniesta’s name ringing out long and loud for the final eight minutes after Barcelona’s No 8 went off.

Iniesta’s career in Catalonia comes to an end after 22 years, 674 games and 32 trophies, and one final victory.

Philippe Coutinho’s curler gave Barcelona the victory, but ultimately for the champions the result was not the most important thing.

Banners celebrated Iniesta around the stadium, with fans thanking him for giving them “so much”.

“Today is a difficult day but it’s been 22 marvellous years,” said Iniesta at the end, in an emotional speech after the trophy had been given out.

“It’s been a pride and a pleasure to defend and represent this badge, for me, the best in the world. Thanks to all my team-mates, each and every one.

“I will miss you all so much. And thank you to the fans, for all your love, everything you’ve made me feel since I arrived here. I came as a boy, I leave as a man.

“I will keep you in my heart forever. To finish, this week has left me speechless. Visca Barca, visca Catalunya, and visca Fuentealbilla.”
