Girona got their hands on the Catalan Super Cup for the first time in their history as they beat Barcelona 1-0 in Sabadell.

Cristhian Stuani scored the game's only goal, firing home from the penalty spot in the second half.

Barca have won two of the previous three editions of the tournament -- all played against Espanyol -- which features Catalonia's two highest finishers in the Spanish league.

But an experimental side came up short against Girona on Wednesday.

Ernesto Valverde rested the majority of his first team squad. There was a debut for Todibo and Cillessen, Murillo, Umtiti, Aleña, Malcom and Boateng all featured as well.

The rest of the squad was made up of B team players, with Riqui Puig completing the full 90 minutes.

Girona had the best chances of the first half. Ex-Barça player Lozano went close, dragging a shot wide, and Patrick Roberts' flick was deflected for a corner.

Malcom had Barça's best chance of the opening period, forcing a good save from Gorka Iraizoz.

B team midfielder Collado shot wide after the break but then became the villain as he fouled Valery Fernandez to give a penalty away.

Substitute Stuani fired into the bottom corner, although Cillessen, captain on the night, did get close.

Aleña hit the bar late on as Barca pushed for an equaliser but Girona held on to win the Catalan Super Cup for the first ever time.
