The Frenkie de Jong saga drags on. Now The Athletic claim that Barcelona told the Dutchman and his camp on July 15 that there was evidence of criminality in his contract agreed by the last board in 2020 when he deferred his salary payments. Barcelona, per the report, asked the player to annul their agreement and return to the previous terms on the deal to normalise the situation. The club cannot pay his salary as it is and want to lower it.

The Athletic say Barcelona were looking at legal action although they would prefer a new deal with the footballer. For now, De Jong and his camp are not too keen on lowering the salary, having already done that in the past and now it’s time to collect what he deferred.

Barcelona think it’s only possible for De Jong to stay if he reduces his deal. Barcelona have also asked Busquets, Pique and Jordi Alba to make an effort to take a pay-cut.

Barcelona have said that if he does not accept a cut then he must leave, with Chelsea and Man United trying to sign him.
