Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu will meet with Eric Abidal on Wednesday after the sporting director clashed with Lionel Messi on Tuesday.

The meeting could prove key to the Catalan club's short and medium-term future after Messi told Abidal to take responsibility for his actions.

Abidal had earlier said in an interview with SPORT that the players "were not satisfied nor working hard" under former coach Ernesto Valverde, which Messi interpreted as him passing the buck.

Wednesday's meeting could spell the end of Abidal's time at the club as he could offer his resignation to president Bartomeu, who was away for business on Tuesday.

RAC1 first revealed they would meet and various sources don't rule out Abidal, a former Barça player, stepping down following Tuesday's events.

Abidal also opened a conflict with Xavi Herndnadez in the SPORT interview, saying that he was never offered the Barcelona job when they decided to move on from Valverde.

In addition, the sporting director has left the squad dangerously short for the second half of the season, with no forward signed in January despite the need for one with Luis Suarez injured and Carles Aleña and Carles Perez allowed to leave.
