Barça forward Memphis Depay's inspiration has dried up

The Dutch striker did not net in the Clasico and hasn't since August from open play

That Barcelona lost a lot of goals this summer with Messi and Griezmann is undeniable. It takes a lot for Koeman’s team to score, and even to create chances. They signed Memphis Depay for free from Olympique Lyon. The Dutchman started the season well but his fountain of goals has dried up. He scored against San Names and Getafe in August, but since then has added just two penalties. He did not get a shot on target in the Clasico.

It was his first Clasico and he started on the left, with Alba, trying to hurt Lucas Vazquez. Madrid’s weak spot in theory. Vazquez fouled the Dutchman early on and should have been booked. A little later he swapped position with Ansu Fati, playing centrally. It didn’t help.

Memphis fired one over the bar. He also cost Barca a goal, giving it away before Alaba struck the opener. The quick break was more or less what decided the Clasico.

In the second half he was nowhere to be seen, out on the left. Little contribution from a man who arrived to make the difference.
