Barça 4-0 Villarreal: Hurricane Ansu ensures perfect start to La Liga

Ronald Koeman's first competitive game ended with a big win on Sunday

Ansu Fati scored twice as Barcelona kicked off the La Liga season with a 4-0 win against Villarreal on Ronald Koeman's competitive debut as coach.

Lionel Messi and a Pau Torres own goal completed the scoring as Koeman made a dream start on the Camp Nou bench.

Koeman's first month in charge has been filled with drama. Messi tried to leave the club unsuccessfully while a number of his closest friends were allowed to go.

As part of a clear out, Luis Suarez, Ivan Rakitic and Arturo Vidal, among others, have all left, while a vote of no confidence has been lodged against president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

However, Koeman's side put all that to one side on Sunday to brush Villarreal aside and send a warning to the rest of La Liga.

In Ansu, Barca have one of the league's most exciting talents and the 17-year-old was responsible for winning this game inside the opening 20 minutes.

The Spain international fired in the opener with a smart first time finish from Jordi Alba's cut-back and added his second minutes later went sent through by Philippe Coutinho.

Ansu then won a penalty which was dispatched by Lionel Messi before Messi's cross was turned into his own net by Pau Torres to give Barça a four-goal lead at the break.

Villarreal goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo made a string of saves after the break to keep the scoreline down as Barca's rhythm dropped. That was perhaps to be expected in their first game of the season.

The ample lead allowed Koeman to hand debuts to new signings Miralem Pjanic, Pedri and Francisco Trincao, while Ousmane Dembele also came on.

Barca are next in action away at Celta Vigo on Thursday and host Sevilla next weekend.
