Luis Suarez is in quarantine after testing positive for coronavirus while on international duty. In the meantime, he has come out in defence of Lionel Messi in an interview with Punto Penal in Uruguay. The Atletico Madrid striker also spoke about the criticism directed at Uruguay following the Covid-19 outbreak last week.

Messi has been criticised in recent weeks by some parts of the media, something that has also affected Suarez. "As a teammate and a friend of Leo, the situation hurts me," he said. He initially said that he has no doubts, though, that Messi "is capable of coming out of it and turning things around."

Suarez accepts that the barbecue organised by the Uruguay national team was "an error" and that he and Diego Godin will accept the punishment from the necessary authorities. "The contagion didn't arrive from that photograph, but we should be an example to the youngster and respect all the controls in place."
