Athletic Bilbao 1-0 Barcelona: Honourable death at Williams's sword

Barcelona played decent football but were dumped out of the Copa del Rey by Inaki Williams’s 93rd minute header.

It was a great header at that, flicked beyond the reach of Marc-Andre ter Stegen, sinking Quique Setien’s side with no time left to turn things around.

It might have been different. Some were saying this was the best performance since the coach took over, even if it ended with the record 30-time cup winners being shown the door at a delirious San Mames.

Barcelona were better in the first half and had chances in the second.

Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann were both denied by excellent Unai Simon saves. Frenkie de Jong should have had a penalty when he was shoved over in the box. A case of the boy who cried wolf, because he dived earlier and was booked for it.

Extra-time beckoned but Inaki decided he wanted to get an early night and ended the game with a killer blow.

Josep Bartomeu and Setien both said they thought Barcelona deserved to go through. Maybe they were right, but it doesn’t really matter now.

"I hope that we can reach the dream we desire," said Williams.

"Sometimes you have to have faith and heart. This cup has thrown up some surprising results, it was complicated but we made it through."
