Pep Guardiola is hunting for a centre-back. And while recruitment has been good elsewhere, he's always had problems with the defence. Millions of petrodollars were spent on Mendy, Danilo, Cancelo, Laporte, Stones and Otamendi and still he hasn't got his defence right.

They bought Nathan Ake from Bournemouth for 45 million but are still hunting for another defender. Their main objective, Kalidou Koulibaly, is proving hard to get from Napoli.

After they refused to lower their price, AS say City turned to Atletico Madrid for plan B - Jose Maria Gimenez.

They are said to have offered 89 million euros plus 5m in variables for the Uruguayan. Which Atletico rejected. He has a 120m euro release clause that City will have to activate. For Simeone he is indispensable.
